Peripheral programme Iris Kensmil

17 November 2015
8 pm

Iris Kensmil invites rapper and performer Akwasi at Club Solo. The two are no strangers to each other.  Akwasi is part of the series portraits Iris Kensmil shows in her solo exhibition. Kensmil approached Akwasi because of his performance in the Dutch television show ‘De Wereld Draait Door’, where he performed a contemporary protest rap. The shared commitment is for Iris the reason to invite Akwasi for a Spoken word performance in relation to her work on tuesday 17 November at 8 pm.

Akwasi, from Amsterdam with Ghanaian roots and born in 1988, made name in the Dutch music culture with the hiphop formation ‘Zwart Licht’ . The record label Top Notch released three albums of Zwart licht, ‘Bliksemschicht’ (2009), ‘No JuJu’ (2010) and ‘Leeroy Draait Door’ (2012). With his animated rap style and compelling presence on stage, Akwasi is the undisputed frontman of the group.

In 2012 he graduated as Theatrical Performer at the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts. After completing his study, Akwasi put his focus back entirely on music and started a new project: ‘Daar Ergens.’ ‘Daar Ergens’, a double album at the intersection of hip-hop and pop, is inspired by and with adaptations of the ten years ago deceased Bram Vermeulen. The album appeared in 2014 on Akwasi’s own independent label Neerlands Dope including the songs ‘O.N.Z.I.N.’ and ‘Dit is een wedstrijd’.

It promises to be a beautiful evening with this passionate and talented artist. And as if that was not enough,  Michiel van der Zanden will act this evening in the capacity of DJ Prom Sterile, with some fly hiphop sounds played on vinyl.
