Gathering amidst the ruins: on the potential of assembly within the context of art institutions

27 october 2021 – 19.00 – 21.00 hrs

Last year, Club Solo published the book on the future and the artist-run spaces. This was followed by the podcast series with the same title and the online exchanges with the Master Institute of Visual Cultures in Breda. With the symposium on tour, we continue the cooperation with writers and speakers ‘physically’ on location.

The first evening is compiled and organised by Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons.

Casco Art Institute is an experimental platform where art invites a new vision of society. Art and commons are Casco’s two most important pillars. They are means for a better way of living together. The commons can be described as the natural and cultural resources held in common by a community, for example, community gardens, mutual aid networks, and open source software. Art is in fact inherent to the commons, as they are shared resources to keep the culture of community alive. In turn, the commons may well sustain art.

For Casco, ‘coming together’; is an important instrument to determine in which direction the institution should go. But which forms of coming together lead to an open and layered decision-making process? What happens if you choose other shapes? How relevant is coming together for the art practice?

In order not to discuss the subject in a judgmental way, the evening takes the form of a ‘lexicon’ composed of words that can make a gathering meaningful and artistically inspiring. Participants in the conversation: Jeanine van Berkel, Hodan Warsame and Tomi Hilsee. Introduction by Ying and Annette Kraus. Philippine Hoegen is the moderator of the evening.
