CÉCILE VERWAAIJEN

Cécile Verwaaijen is attracted to the places in the world where life is lived on a razor’s edge. She tries to find a language to express her feelings of fear and dismay, but also of wonderment and fascination. In her series Learning Arabic she builds a softer world, challenging the current systems of oppression and exclusion. Her work balances between beauty and horror, offering a new or different perspective on a troubled world.

Club Solo is showing a range of new works by Cécile Verwaaijen, alongside a series of paintings from her early practice as a painter.

BADALOV

M KHA will be showing the installation I am euromental (2015) by artist and poet Babi Badalov (Azerbaijan, 1959) in response to Cécile Verwaaijen’s solo exhibition. An influential artist in St. Petersburg’s underground scene of the 1980s, Badalov makes objects, paintings and installations, and does live performances. He mixes languages and images from various cultures in his poetry. Badalov made the installation I am euromental for the Moscow Bienniale (VDNKh, 2015). In this work, he uses word and sound associations to address serious geopolitical matters.
