Club Solo organises a series of lectures together with residents of De Ateliers (Amsterdam). In these lectures the artists talk about their work in relation to the residency. Each speaker chooses the next resident to give the next lecture. Sophie Soobramanien was chosen by Pedram Sazesh who gave De Ateliers Lecture in June 2021.
Sophie Soobramanien (b. 1995) is a British Mauritian artist based in Amsterdam. She offers the potential for new in-roads and rabbit holes to people who may feel akin to her. Growing up between varying cultures, she is interested in how the individual builds, signifies and performs identity amidst a constantly shifting ecosystem of personal and familial histories, emotionality and desire.
Soobramanien is currently working towards a film installation titled An O for U: a tentacled, multifarious, audiovisual fever dream that interrogates, fractures and confuses a hyper-stereotyped presentation of ‘the Asian woman’ in Western culture. It implements confronting imagery from family archives to tentacle porn to Hollywood films that will visualise a constantly shifting kaleidoscopic gaze of the self-replicated in relation to media and society.
