PARKIN GALLERY TEHERAN (IR)

Parkingallery is an independent project space based in Tehran that seeks freedom within a heavily censored art environment. The initiative began in 1998 as a temporary exhibition space and graphic design studio. In summer 2002, the online project parkingallery.com was launched and since then, the initiative has been initiating international exhibitions and workshop projects within Tehran’s emerging contemporary art scene. Parkingallery is directed by Amirali Ghasemi.

In the month of August, the independent artist initiative Parkingallery from Teheran will be the guest of Club Solo for four weeks. It is the second time that a foreign artist initiative is part of the programme of Hotel Solo.

Parkingallery has been presenting young artists from Tehran since 1998. Part of its programming is the Iranian New Media Society (INMS), a platform for research and for making new media art in Iran visible. In Breda, Parkingallery starts a new initiative: ‘The Nomad School for New Media, Sound and Performance’. Under the title ‘Wake-up Stories’, nine young Iranian artists present workshops, events and public projects at Club Solo.

‘WAKE-UP STORIES’

Storytelling is an essential part of Iranian culture and forms an important part of the projects of the participating artists. During ‘Wake-up Stories’, encounters and exchanges take place that focus on the idea of waking up and the transition from sleeping to waking up. In what way does storytelling play a role in this? How can stories feed the imagination and bring about connections and changes?

The artists from Iran work together with Iranian artists living and working in Europe and guest speakers from the visual arts, performance, film, audiovisual media, architecture, photography and cookery. Amirali Ghasemi, initiator and curator of Parkingallery, is the curator of ‘Wake-up Stories’.

– When did you wake up?
– I don’t know, a while ago…
– Tell me about it?
– Why? do you wanna ask if I had a dream?
– No, tell me a story, a wake-up story!
